Sarasota - Bradenton & Gulf Coast Islands

 

Sarasota is located on southwestern coast of Florida.  The barrier
islands famous for the quality of their beaches belonging to Sarasota
are Lido Key, Saint Armand Key, Otter Key, Coon Key, Bird Key
and part of Longboat Key and Siesta Key.  Longboat Key south
of Anna Maria Island is divided between Manatee and
Sarasota counties.

Bradenton is located between Tampa and Sarasota at the mouth of
Tampa Bay with the Manatee River running through the city.  It has a
population of about 50,000 people.  Attractions in downtown Bradenton
include South Florida Museum, Bishop Planetarium and
Parker Manatee Aquarium.


Sarasota Bradenton International Airport serves
over 1 million passengers a year.

Sarasota attractions include The Ringling Museum of Arts, Selby Gardens,
Sarasota Jungle Gardens and the educational Mote Marine Laboratory and
Aquarium.  Great shopping can be found at the sophisticated
Saint Armand´s Circle or at the shops on Siesta Key. 
Sarasota is also famous for the great restaurants.

This sculpture is called "Unconditional Surrender" (The Japanese
surrender August 14, 1945).  The name of the sculptor is J. Seward
Johnson.  Jack Curran, a veteran of World War II bought the sculpture
with help of various Sarasota County veterans organizations. and donated
it to the city of Sarasota..  The presence of this sculpture prompts
viewers to never forget the "Greatest Generation" or the
day when they demonstrated their unity.

Anna Maria Island is 7.5 miles long and one mile wide with powder soft
white sand beaches and has no buildings taller than three stories.

Bradenton Beach is located on Anna Maria Island and has a population of about
1,700 people. The two other cities on Anna Maria Island are the city of
Holmes Beach with a population of about 5,000 and Anna Maria Island
City with a population of about 1,800 people.
